Marzouk made his remarks on Tuesday during the trial operation launch of the Correction and Rehabilitation Centre in Belbeis, located in the Sharqia governorate.

The Ministry of Interior stated that the launch of the Belbeis centre marks the completion of the second phase of the plan to establish advanced detention facilities.

According to Marzouk, a record for each inmate has been created at the this facility to determine the appropriate method for correcting their behavior under the guidance of psychology experts.

The focus is on modifying the behavior and morality of the inmates, as well as providing them healthcare, he said.

At the launch event, Marzouk announced that the ministry has performed 1,270 surgical operations and 27,000 medical assessments for prisoners.

"We seek to uphold values of human rights in correctional centres and respect the dignity of the inmates,” the statement quoted Marzouk as saying.

He also said that they work on teaching and correcting the ideas of the inmates. 

The new centre, Marzouk added, also seeks to employ the inmates in production projects and integrate them into society by helping them secure a source of professional livelihood.

The goods produced by the new projects will be offered at reduced prices in the exhibitions of the ministry's community protection sector, he added.

​“The experiment has proven the success of reform programmes in modifying the inmates’ behavior, which confirms that we are on the right path," Marzouk added.

The county's plan to expand correctional and rehabilitation centres has been internationally praised, Marzouk noted.

Since 2021, the interior ministry started to restructure prisons and rehabilitation centres in order to meet the highest international standards of human rights and modern technology.

The same year, Egypt inaugurated Wadi Al-Natroun Rehabilitation Centre, one of the largest such centres worldwide.

The Natroun Centre replaced 12 traditional prisons, or 25 percent of Egypt's total prisons, according to a previous statement by the interior ministry. 

Marzouk explained that the correctional and rehabilitation centres will now be free of indebted prisoners, as per the recent directives of the political leadership.

On Monday, President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi issued directives to pardon all the indebted men and women currently in prison ahead of the holy month of Ramadan.
