The tremor was felt, but no damages or casualties were reported, according to the National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics (NRIAG).

Occurring 7 kilometres deep, the earthquake struck at 02:01 am local time, with the exact location of 24.36 degrees north and 33.25 degrees east.

Following the devastating tragedy in Turkey and Syria on 6 February, NRIAG called for people not to panic.

Head of NRIAG Gad El-Qady cautioned the public against falling prey to panic caused by rumors or fake information issued by non-specialists.

Egypt is typically a country safe from earthquakes and rarely experiences them. The latest major earthquake, measuring 5.6 in magnitude, killed 541 people and injured over 6,500 in 1992.
