The initiative comes in celebration of the Holy month of Ramadan, according to a post by the Canadian Embassy in Cairo on its social media accounts.

Today, the North American diplomats were taking a page in their gesture from a very-Egyptian tradition during the holy month.

In the minutes before sunset on Ramadan days, many Egyptians – Muslims and non-Muslims - take to the streets to distribute quick snacks, dried dates, water and juices, to help Muslims who are still on the street - for one reason or another at that time - break the fast, before they can get around to sitting down for a proper meal.

Meanwhile, the Street Iftar, a centuries old tradition in the country, are communal banquets organised by well-to-do citizens which provide nutritious meals - and dessert - to millions across the nation after sunset on every day of the holy month.
