4.57 magnitude earthquake hits near Egypt's Hurghada, no damage reported

An earthquake measuring 4.57 on the Richter scale hit 37 kilometres northeast of Hurghada along the Red Sea coast Saturday morning, according to Egypt's National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics (NRIAG).

The tremor occurred about 1:58am (Cairo local time) at depth of 23.4 kilometres, according to the NRIAG,

The tremor was not felt, and no damages or casualties were reported, added the NRIAG.

The country's latest major earthquake, measuring 5.8 magnitude, struck in 1992, killing 541 people and injuring nearly 6,500 in Greater Cairo.
