Egypt to compensate families of victims in Kharga-Assiut road accident

The Ministry of Social Solidarity will compensate the families of the victims of the Kharga-Assiut road accident, announced an official statement released by the ministry on Thursday.

The accident occurred earlier today when a passenger bus collided with a truck on a motor highway in southern Egypt. It left 18 dead and 29 injured, the statement continued.

The victims were 13 men, two women and three children, the ministry clarified.

Compensation amounting to EGP 100,000 will be given to the families of those who passed away from the accident, announced Minister of Social Solidarity Nevine El-Qabbaj.

For the injured, the ministry will allocate compensation according to the length of stay in the hospital, the minister continued, with extra consideration to those who develop a disability as a result of the accident, she added.

The injured were transferred to Kharga and Assuit hospitals.

Additionally, the Social Solidarity fund was instructed to immediately distribute EGP 10,000 to the families of deceased victims with assurances that full compensation will begin next week, the minister declared.  

According to the Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS), road mishaps claimed the lives of 7,101 people annually nationwide, up from 6,164 deaths recorded a year prior a 15.2 percent increase.
