The tremor occurred at 10:12 pm Cairo local time at a depth of 20.2 kilometres, the NRIAG reported.
However, the tremor was not felt and no casualties or damages were reported, the institute continued.
The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) also recorded the earthquake at a magnitude of 3.8 with a depth of 20 kilometres, adding that it also measures 93 kilometres west of Egypt’s coastal city of Hurghada.
The country's latest major earthquake, measuring 5.8 magnitude, struck in 1992, killing 541 people and injuring nearly 6,500 in Greater Cairo.
