The impact factor index measures how often articles published in the journal are cited, reflecting the importance of a journal to the field.

In a statement Monday, Cairo University President Othman El-Khosht called the achievement a “new milestone for the university.”

It is also “an indicator of the [university’s] scientific research progress in the field of oncology," he added.

Established in 1982, JENCI is an online scientific journal that operates in cooperation with the international publishing house Springer Nature. It focuses on publishing the latest innovations in all fields of oncology, including basic, applied and clinical cancer research, with an average of four research papers published monthly.

El-Khosht revealed that the number of submissions to the journal has increased compared to the previous year.

"The acceptance rate for research papers was 12 percent of the total submitted papers in 2021 and has dropped down to 9 percent this year, which indicates the journal's commitment to international high standards in selecting papers to be published," El-Khosht added.

Mohamed Abdel-Moatee, head of the National Cancer Institute (NCI), noted that there has been a substantial increase in submissions from outside of Egypt, increasing 70.7 percent in 2021 compared to 2020.

On June 30, Cairo University made significant progress in the QS World University Rankings 2024, climbing 184 spots to 371. This puts it in the top 25 percent of global educational institutions, surpassing the American University in Cairo (AUC), which dropped one spot to 415.
