The Cabinet announced on Wednesday that there would be a paid holiday for public employees from 20 July to 23 July to celebrate the Islamic (Hijri) New Year 1445 and the 23 July Revolution.

According to the statement, the two paid holidays will be granted to employees working in ministries, government agencies, public authorities, local administration units, and public business sector companies.

Starting in 2020, the government moved weekday public holidays (excluding Eid El-Fitr, Eid El-Adha, and Coptic Christmas) to Thursdays if they fall on a weekday, allowing citizens to enjoy a long weekend.

Muslims worldwide use the Hijri Calendar, which began in AD 622, to determine important Islamic events such as the holy month of Ramadan and the Hajj pilgrimage.

The 23 July holiday marks the anniversary of the 1952 Revolution, which ended the monarchy and established a republic.
