In mid-July, the government began a nationwide load-shedding programme to alleviate the mounting pressure on the country's gas network, strained by rising temperatures and the use of air conditioners.
The Egyptian government then extended the duration of the daily power cuts in October, driven by increasing temperatures and a decline in gas imports.
In January, however, the cabinet announced it would restrict power cuts to morning hours during the mid-year exams season for the benefit of the students.
The Islamic holy month of Ramadan begins on 11 March in Egypt and lasts for 30 days, the National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics (NRIAG) announced on Wednesday.
