The deadline for foreigners residing unlawfully in Egypt, including those with expired residences, to adjust their status is 15 March.

The deadline was originally set for December 2023, but was extended by three months.

Earlier in August, Egypt issued a decree requiring foreigners to legitimize their residency, either for tourism or other purposes, to pay fees in hard currency.

They are required to submit an invoice for the transaction from a local bank or registered foreign exchange house.

The decree is the latest in a series of moves aimed at collecting more foreign currency as the country is suffering from a shortage of US dollars amid rising debt and inflationary pressures.

Around 9.1 million migrants and refugees from 133 countries reside in Egypt, according to the International Organization for Migration's (IOM) latest figures.
