Egypt braces for an extreme heatwave, expected to peak on Thursday and Friday.

The Egyptian Meteorological Authority (EMA) warned of soaring temperatures across the country these days.

Experiencing severe heat and increased humidity, this heatwave is anticipated to affect all regions, with Cairo reaching 42 degrees.

The heightened humidity levels will exacerbate the discomfort, making both daytime and nighttime conditions particularly oppressive.

According to EMA, these weather conditions are unusual for this time of year, marking a significant deviation from typical seasonal patterns.

A recent report by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) highlighted that June 2024 was the warmest ever globally, underscoring the unprecedented nature of the current heatwave.

EMA has advised citizens to stay indoors, remain hydrated, and avoid outdoor activities during peak heat hours.

Gradual relief

Starting Saturday, a gradual but slight decrease in temperatures is expected, bringing some relief from the oppressive heat. However, the overall conditions will remain hotter than usual for several days.

Temperatures in Cairo and Lower Egypt are anticipated to reach 40 degrees, which will affect workers in these regions.

South Sinai will experience even hotter days with temperatures peaking at 44 degrees, impacting those on vacation there.

Visitors to the North Coast can expect milder conditions with highs of 35 degrees.

In northern Upper Egypt, temperatures will reach 43 degrees, while Southern Upper Egypt will stay hot all week, with highs of 46 degrees.

This trend of increasing global temperatures highlights the growing impact of global climate change, with more frequent and intense heat waves becoming a new reality.
