Egypt's Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS) released a new report on Thursday, 15 May 2025. The report coincides with the International Day of Families, observed annually on 15 May. It highlights key data on Egyptian households and demographics.

Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993, the International Day of Families emphasises the importance of families and promotes efforts by governments and organisations to improve their quality of life.

This year, the day is celebrated under the theme: "Family-Oriented Policies for Sustainable Development." The observance reflects global recognition of families' central role in comprehensive development and achieving sustainable goals.

According to the CAPMAS report, Egypt had 26.5 million households as of 1 January 2025. Of these, 14.7 million households (55.6 percent) reside in rural areas, while 11.8 million (44.4 percent) live in urban centres. The data highlights the predominance of rural residency among Egyptian families.

Demographic indicators show that 34.3 percent of individuals are under the age of 15. In contrast, 26.8 percent fall within the youth age group (15–29 years).

Meanwhile, 35 percent are of working age (30–64 years) and 3.9 percent are elderly (65 years and older).

The report also references the United Nations population projections, which estimate that the global population will reach 8.9 billion by mid-2035 and 9.7 billion by mid-2050. Such an increase underlines the growing importance of sustainable family policies worldwide.

In addition, 189,400 students are enrolled in community and special education programmes.

In higher education, 3.76 million students—49.6 percent of whom are females and 50.4 percent males—are enrolled across all institutions.
