The National Press Authority (NPA) announced on Thursday the results of the first edition of its Journalism Excellence Awards, naming Al-Ahram Weekly and Al-Ahram Hebdo among the recipients of a special prize for their distinguished coverage of the Grand Egyptian Museum inauguration.

The decisions were approved during the Authority’s monthly meeting on Thursday evening, which also saw a series of structural and organisational announcements affecting the national press sector.

The NPA said its board unanimously agreed to merge Horreya magazine, published by the Dar Al-Tahrir institution, into Al-Gomhuriya newspaper as a weekly supplement issued every Sunday.

Special Honours and New Award categories

As part of this year’s awards, the NPA introduced a special category recognising outstanding media coverage of the long-awaited Grand Egyptian Museum opening—coverage in which state-owned newspapers excelled.

The prize was jointly awarded to Al-Ahram, Al-Akhbar, Al-Gomhuriya, Al-Ahram Hebdo, and Al-Ahram Weekly, in recognition of their high-quality reporting on what the Authority described as a historic national event.

The board also decided to name this year’s edition of the Excellence Awards after the renowned columnist and veteran journalist Sanaa El-Besy, in tribute to her long and distinguished career in Egypt’s national press.
