Over recent years, the university has achieved consecutive advances in the rankings, climbing from 427th globally in 2020 to 392nd in 2021, 363rd in 2022, 271st in 2024, 248th in 2025, and ultimately 221st in the 2026 edition, underscoring the sustainability of its development and progress trajectory.
The university also achieved exceptional results that strengthened its international presence, ranking among the world’s top 50 in three major disciplines: 13th globally in Pharmacology and Toxicology, 31st in Mathematics, and 47th in Polymer Science.
The university also ranked among the world’s top 100 in several important fields, placing 59th in Plant and Animal Science, 66th in Food Science and Technology, 70th in Public, Environmental and Occupational Health, 88th in Agricultural Sciences, and 96th in Biology and Biochemistry.
Cairo University further maintained its strong standing among the world’s top 200 disciplines, ranking 138th in Microbiology, 161st in Chemistry, 185th in Clinical Medicine, 189th in Water Resources Engineering, and 197th in Green and Sustainable Science and Technology.
The university’s significant progress marks a new international achievement that reflects the strength of its academic and research performance, its leadership at both the regional and global levels, and its ongoing rise in global rankings.
President of Cairo University, Mohamed Samy Abdel Sadek, said the achievement represents the culmination of the university’s efforts to implement its ambitious strategy to advance education and scientific research and enhance international competitiveness.
He noted that it reflects the university’s growing status as one of the leading academic and research institutions regionally and globally.
The university’s continued progress in prestigious international rankings, he added, demonstrates the success of policies adopted in recent years to build a competitive research environment.
This environment, Abdel Sadek noted, has an increasing global impact by supporting researchers, developing research infrastructure, encouraging international scientific publishing, and strengthening cooperation with leading universities and research institutions worldwide, thereby improving the quality and international influence of its scientific output.
He emphasized that Cairo University’s goal extends beyond merely improving its position in global rankings as it seeks to build a world-class university system that generates knowledge, drives innovation and development, integrates academic and research excellence, and serves society.
For his part, Vice President of the University for Graduate Studies and Research Affairs Mahmoud Al-Saeed stated that the ranking results reflect significant improvement in the quality of the university’s scientific output.
The ranking also reflects, according to Al-Saeed, the institution's increasing rate in international publications and its expansion of research collaborations with global institutions.
He affirmed that the university will continue implementing plans to promote innovation, interdisciplinary research, and the alignment of scientific research with societal needs and development priorities.
The US News & World Report ranking is considered one of the most influential international university rankings, relying primarily on indicators such as research performance, global and regional academic reputation, scientific research impact, reference citation rates, the share of highly cited papers globally, international collaboration, and publication in high-impact scientific journals.
