Security forces have broken up 40 terror cells and arrested 225 suspected militants since April, Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim said on Monday.

Speaking at a press conference, he accused the controversial pro-Morsi Islamist cleric Wagdy Ghoneim of funding the suspects.

Ibrahim said the suspects belong to the Sinai-based militant group Ansar Beit Al-Maqdis, which has claimed responsibility for the majority of recent attacks, its offshoot, Agnad Misr, and secret cells affiliated to the Muslim Brotherhood.

Attacks targeting police and army troops since last summer’s ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi have left over 400 dead.

The army, assisted by the police, has since launched an offensive to counter the insurgency.
