Presidential hopeful Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi has urged Egyptians living abroad to participate in the upcoming presidential race in which he is running against Nasserist politician Hamdeen Sabahi.
In a statement published on his official Facebook page late on Tuesday, the former defence minister asked Egyptian expats to "strongly participate in the presidential elections by casting their votes for the candidate they choose for the future of Egypt".
"The nation is going through unprecedented circumstances. We ask our children abroad not to leave their country in such a condition," read the statement.
Egyptian expats are the first to cast their ballots, with voting taking place at Egyptian embassies worldwide from 15 to 18 May.
El-Sisi's only rival, Sabahi, spoke to a number of Egyptian expat voters via video conference on Monday.
Egyptians will cast their ballots domestically on 26-27 May.
