Nine people were killed and five others injured in a stampede outside a military institute in Sharqiya on Tuesday, the army's spokesman said on his Facebook.

The stampede took place early Tuesday at the institute of non-commissioned army officers in Tel Al-Kebir, Sharqiya governorate, said army spokesman Brigadier General Mohamed Samir.

The incident occurred as relatives of the institute's students gathered in front of the gates.

The spokesman sent the army's condolences to the families of the victims.

Prosecutors are investigating the site of the tragedy and interviewing survivors in hospital.

Children and elderly people were among the victims.

There were no injuries caused by live ammunition, prosecutors said.

The forensics authority will prepare autopsy reports on the victims.
