German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Egypt's President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi spoke on the phone on Monday and the Egyptian president was invited to visit Germany.
Spokesman for Germany's government, Steffen Seibert, said in a short statement that both leaders discussed bilateral relations and the latest developments in the Middle East.
Merkel invited El-Sisi to visit Germany after Egypt holds its upcoming parliamentary elections, said the statement.
The Egyptian presidency said that it will release a statement later about the telephone call.
