Several main streets in the Upper Egyptian city of Aswan were flooded on Sunday when a water main broke, affecting both traffic and the city's water supply for several hours, Al-Ahram's Arabic news website reported.

Traffic came to a standstill for several hours from early in the morning and several districts in the city suffered a cut in water for nearly eight hours, Al-Ahram said.

Aswan's governor, Mostafa Yousry, has announced he will refer officials in the city's water and sanitation authority to the prosecutor-general for investigations on charges of negligence.

The city is a popular tourist destination for both Egyptians and foreigners, known for its antiquities and boat trips along the Nile River.
