The family of Omar Abdel Rahman, known as the 'Blind Sheikh', has requested his immediate release and return to Egypt after the killing of Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.

Abdallah Abdel Rahman, the cleric’s oldest son and his official spokesperson told Ahram Online that "the time has come to release Sheik Omar. His continued incarceration will result in the anger of the whole Islamic world against US policies."

Omar Abdel Rahman, the spiritual father of the Islamic Group, is serving a prison sentence in High Security Colorado Prison in North Carolina for his incitement of violence against US civilians.

His son said he presented an official affidavit to the US Embassy in Cairo on Monday requesting the release of his father who is suffering from poor health.

He also said that cleric presented a similar request in the US asking that he be returned to Egypt.

Representatives of Abdel Rahman’s family met with the attorney general two days ago and he is said to have informed them during the meeting that Cairo is prepared to receive Sheik Omar Abdel Rahman.
