Noman Gomaa, former president of the Wafd Party, died on Tuesday at the age of 79 after weeks spent in a Paris hospital.
Gomaa was hospitalised earlier this month after fainting during a walk through the French capital.
Egypt's consulate in Paris took the necessary arrangements for the body to be returned to Egypt on Wednesday on an EgyptAir flight, according to Al-Ahram's Arabic news website.
Gomaa ran in Egypt's first presidential election in 2005, finishing third behind politician Ayman Nour and then-ruling Hosni Mubarak.
Gomaa graduated from law school in Egypt and obtained a PhD in civil law from Paris University.
He was elected dean of Cairo University's law faculty for two consecutive terms. He joined the Wafd Party in 1948, and in 2000 he was elected the party's fourth president.
