Four detainees have escaped from a police station jail in Egypt's Kafr El-Sheikh in the Nile Delta, state news agency MENA reported Sunday.

The four detainees, kept at Bila Police Station, managed to flee amid havoc among detainees after the outbreak of a fire.

MENA reported that police personnel headed to the station jail after hearing calls for help from detainees. Fire had engulfed bedding in the holding room. Scuffles reportedly broke out when police opened the doors, with the four detainees managing to escape.

Jails in police stations in Egypt usually hold those detained pending investigations, ahead of being referred to trial.

Egyptian media has reported recently on several similar escape attempts.

In September, 16 detainees escaped from a police station in the city of Mahalla. Police, however, managed to track down most of them.
