A reliable Egyptian source has refuted media reports claiming that Egypt has sent a military delegation to oversee the implementation of the newly signed reconciliation agreement between Palestinian factions Fatah and Hamas.
“It’s too early to talk about sending Egyptian troops or committees to Gaza in order to supervise the unity deal,” the anonymous source told Al-Hayat newspaper. “Several steps must be taken first by both movements.”
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Hamas leader Khaled Meshal buried the proverbial hatchet at a ceremony on Wednesday in Cairo, which ended a nearly four-year feud and has notably angered Israel.
When asked about the anticipated meeting between Fatah and Hamas, the source said: “Egypt will not interfere unless it was told to. We are here to help and to push things forward.”
