The health ministry announces that a man died of bird flu in Minya governorate, raising the death toll to 7 in Egypt this year

A man died on Monday in Minya governorate of complications from H5N1 "Bird flu" raising the number of the total Egyptian fatalities from the virus to seven, reported Egypt's ministry of health. 

According to the health ministry’s statement issued on Tuesday, the 26 year-old man was transferred to a hospital on Sunday where he was put on a ventilator and given Tamiflu but eventually collapsed and died on Monday. 

The ministry added in its statement that a woman from Sohag governorate was also infected by H5N1 and transferred to a hospital. The 33 year-old is currently on a ventilator and in critical condition.

According to the health ministry a total of 14 H5N1 infection cases have been confirmed in Egypt this year. 

In Egypt, most cases of bird flu have been identified in rural areas, where villagers tend to raise poultry in their homes, increasing exposure to live or dead infected birds.
