The law paves the way for parliamentary elections

Egypt's new draft electoral consistencies law is now ready for cabinet approval, Al-Ahram's Arabic news website reported on Monday.

Transitional Justice Minister Ibrahim El-Heneidy and a committee overlooking the drafting of the law had been working on the long-awaited draft that paves the way for holding parliamentary elections.

The cabinet is expected to review the law on Wednesday, with polls slated for the first quarter of 2015.

Three new governorates were recently added to Egypt's existing 27, the reason behind the electoral constituencies law's delay, according to previous statements by El-Heneidy. The new governorates are Al-Alamein, Al-Wahat and Middle Sinai.

According to article three of the house law, Egypt's new ‎parliament must be comprised of 567 seats, with 420 (73 ‎percent) allocated to independents and 120 (22 per‎cent) reserved for party-based candidates, while ‎‎27 (5 percent) seats will be devoted to presidential ‎appointees.‎
