Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi condemned Wednesday the "terrorist attack" on a French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo that left at least 12 people dead, voicing Cairo's solidarity with France and underlining that the fight against terrorism is a global concern. 

In a condolence letter sent to his French counterpart Francois Hollande, El-Sisi "expressed the Egyptian people and government's condemnation of the terrorist act that the French capital Paris witnessed today," a statement by his office said.

Earlier Wednesday, hooded gunmen shouting an Islamist rallying cry stormed the Paris offices of Charlie Hebdo, killing at least 12 people in France's worst militant attack in decades. A number of the weekly's prominent editors and cartoonists were among the victims.

The Egyptian leader offered his condolences to the victims' families and the injured, saying "terrorism is an international phenomenon that should be confronted and eradicated through joint international efforts."

Charlie Hebdo stirred controversy in the past for its satirical attacks on religious and political leaders and its publishing of numerous cartoons lampooning the Prophet Mohammed.
