Unknown assailants open fire at guards outside a hotel in Al-Arish

A member of Egypt's security forces was killed and another injured in a drive-by shooting in the volatile Sinai Peninsula, Al-Ahram Arabic news website reported.

Eyewitnesses said unknown assailants in a car opened fire at the men as they stood guard outside a hotel in the provincial capital of Al-Arish, where tens of people, including civilians, were killed last week.

The men were ferried to a local hospital and security forces were combing the area in search of the suspects.

Last week, simultaneous attacks by jihadist fighters targeted security forces with rockets and car bombs in Al-Arish, killing at least 30, including civilians.

The violence was the deadliest since Islamist militants killed 31 soldiers and wounded tens of others on 24 October in northern Sinai.  It was claimed by an Islamic State's Egyptian affiliate, previously known as Ansar Beit Al-Maqdis.

Egypt's army has struggled to crush an Islamist insurrection in the region that has heightened since the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in July 2013. Hundreds of security personnel have been killed since.
