5.7-magnitude earthquake rattles Cairo, North Coast

No damages or injuries were reported

A 5.7 magnitude earthquake rattled Cairo, Suez and other cities along the North Coast in the early hours of Saturday with no damages or injuries reported.

The tremor, hit at 1:34:54 am and lasted for a few seconds, Head of the National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics Abo El-Ela Amin told Ahram Online.

The epicenter of the earthquake was 475 km north of Matrouh governorate and 650 kilometers North of Cairo, at a depth of 50 kilometers (31 miles).

The most destructive earthquake in the country's modern history struck Cairo in October 1992, at a magnitude of 5.8, killing more than 500 people, injuring thousands and displacing tens of thousands.
