Egypt’s Illicit Profiteering Authority has started interrogating Ahmed Ezz, the former ruling National Democratic Party secretary, over his LE11 billion ($1.89b) fortune.

Ezz is accused of taking advantage of his former position to illegally expand his personal wealth through monopolies and state privatisation projects.

His wealth is estimated based on a combination of his companies, accounts and real estate. His companies are priced at LE7b; his bank accounts hold roughly LE3b; and his properties, which include villas, houses and hotels that he is accused of having gained through his connections with Gamal Mubarak, son of Egypt’s ousted president.
