Mostafa Ibrahim was one of six to be killed in a militant attack on a military armoured vehicle on Sunday

Thousands of mourners in Menoufia, north of Cairo, on Monday attended the funeral of Mostafa Ibrahim, one of six victims killed on Sunday in a militant attack on a military armoured vehicle on the highway between Al-Arish and Sheikh Zuweid in North Sinai.

During the funeral, according to the Ahram Arabic news website, mourners chanted slogans against the Muslim Brotherhood, an organisation that the government designated as "terrorist", and has been widely blamed for mounting attacks on security forces, after the ouster of Brotherhood president Mohamed Morsi in 2013.

A first lieutenant, a sergeant and four conscripts were killed, as well as two other soldiers injured, in the Sunday attack, which was claimed by Islamist militant group Ansar Beit Al-Maqdis.

Hours later, the group also claimed another attack that killed at least six more outside a police station in Al-Arish.

Last Friday, the group, which has previously pledged allegiance to the Islamic State militant group, published a graphic video showing the execution of a 20-year-old soldier kidnapped during a 3-April attack on security checkpoints that killed 15 soldiers.
