Egypt's President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi on Wednesday met the head of US Central Command, General Lloyd James Austin, and his accompanying delegation in Cairo to discuss counterterrorism efforts, Egypt's presidency has announced.

El-Sisi and Austin also discussed the latest developments in the Middle East, as well as Egyptian-American military cooperation.

The meeting was attended by Egypt's Defence Minister Sedky Sobhi and Egyptian armed forces chief of staff Lieutenant-General Mahmoud Hegazy at the Egyptian presidency. 

Earlier on Wednesday, General Austin met with Sobhi at the defence ministry.
