Five youth drowned while swimming in the Damietta Governorate's popular beach of Ras El-Barr on the Mediterranean, Al-Ahram Arabic news website reported Friday.
Rescuers were able to save five other swimmers from near drowning, Ahram reported.
Damietta prosecutor ordered a legal probe into the incident, sending a team of investigators to the scene.
All five survivors were transported to nearby hospitals.
Authorities have dispatched more first response workers and life guards to secure beaches and swimmers in the area.
