Egypt's second city of Alexandria is gearing up to host what is aimed to be the world's longest food table that will feed thousands of Muslims breaking their dawn-to-dusk fasting on Friday.

Eight hundred volunteers are taking part in the event which seeks to establish a Guinness World Record for the longest table, organisers said during a presser on Thursday.

At a length of more than 7 kilometres, the seaside table in the coastal city is planned to accommodate 10,000 fasting people to have iftar meals.

Dozens of businessmen and donors are assisting with funds and meals.

Across the Muslim world, mosques and charity groups set up tables for the public to eat free iftar meals every day during the fasting holy month of Ramadan.

Provincial governor Hany Al-Mesery said that 7,000 participants had registered to attend the event, state news agency MENA reported.

Meals served will be sponsored by the Egyptian army, naval and the police forces who will also help secure the event, the governor added.
