The UN Security Council condemned on Monday "in the strongest terms" the assassination of Egyptian Prosecutor General Hisham Barakat.
"The members of the Security Council extended their condolences to the family of the victim and their sympathy to all those injured in this heinous attack, as well as to the people and the Government of Egypt," read a UN statement.
On Monday, a terrorist bomb targeted the convoy of the prosecutor shortly after he departed his home to work, leaving the 65-year-old Barakat dead a few hours later in a nearby hospital.
The members of the Security Council stressed the need to bring the perpetrators of this act of terrorism to justice and the need to combat it.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon also extended his condolences to the family of the deceased and to the Government of Egypt in a short statement released Monday.
