Former minister of interior Habib El-Adly and 12 other officials in the Ministry of Interior were referred on Thursday to criminal court over illicit gains charges, Aswat Masriya reported.
The defendants are accused of using their influence to acquire illicit gains amounting to one billion Egyptian pounds (close to $128 million) when Habib El-Adly was minister of interior.
El-Adly served as Mubarak's minister of interior from 1997 until 2011.
In statements to Reuters’ Aswat Masriya, the former minister’s lawyer Mohamed El-Gendy said that his client was referred to the criminal court because he was in office at that time.
El-Adly was released from detention in March after being acquitted on charges of using his political influence to acquire illicit gains amounting to LE181 million.
Last year, he was acquitted along with six of his aides and former president Hosni Mubarak on charges of complicity in the killing of protesters during the January 2011 uprising.
In a separate case, El-Adly also saw an initial 12-year sentence and LE15 million worth of fines dropped over charges of corruption and money laundering.
