One policeman has been killed and three others injured after unknown assailants fired shots early Saturday at a prisoners transfer truck on the Cairo-Fayoum desert road, Al-Ahram Arabic news website reported.

The injuried were transported to the Fayoum General Hospital for treatment.

According to initial investigations, armed men on a motorcycle fired shots on the police truck that was travelling on the desert road south of Cairo.

The Cairo-Fayoum desert road has been disrupted several times by assailants firing on security checkpoints.

In May, assailants fired on a checkpoint on the road. However, no injuries were reported and the assailants escaped.

Armed attacks on police checkpoints and other security sites by anti-government Islamist militants have become common over the last two years.

Hundreds of security personnel have been killed or injured in such attacks.
