Egyptian minister of Justice Ahmed El-Zend granted Municipality heads arrest powers, MENA reported on Wednesday.

Arrest powers enable municipality heads to strictly face any violations of the law on Cairo streets.

Arrest powers right qualifies Municipality heads to report violations directly to the prosecution for investigation, instead of a longer procedure.

According to article 232 of the Egyptian work law, only the minister of Justice has the authority to grant the arrest powers.

Municipality forces in Cairo have been working for the past few months on punishing violators including street vendors who hamper traffic, and coffee shops that illegally serve on sidewalks.

In July, Egyptian Engineers Syndicate was granted arrest powers to stop construction violations in buildings.
