Despite working at the university's hospital for years, many employees cannot even be treated by its facilities

Hundreds of employees of the Zaqaziq University Hospital have begun a hunger strike and a protest in front of the hospital headquarters.

The protesters are angry that despite working in the hospital for years, they only have temporary contracts.

Mohamed Ahmed, one of the hospital employees, complained that he has been working in the hospital for five years but because he has a temporary contract, he is not entitled to full rights. Amal El-Sayed, another protester, has the same problem.

She has been working in the hospital for ten years on a temporary contract, meaning she has no social insurance nor can she be treatment in the hospital at which she works.

Ahmed El-Refaay, assistant to the university president, asked the employees to end their protest and to return to work. However, the protesters insisted that they won’t end the strike until interim Prime Minister Essam Sharaf and Minister of Higher Education Amr Ezzat Salama intervene.
