Egypt asks Spain to extradite fugitive Mubarak ally

Minister of interior says Hussein Salem's criminal file is with the Spanish authorities as Egypt steps up efforts for his extradition

Speaking today to a group of police officers at an educational conference, Minister of Interior Mansour El-Eissawi confirmed that the Egyptian government has sent the criminal file of fugitive businessman Hussein Salem, a close associate of former president Mubarak, to the government of Spain asking for his repatriation.

Salem, who holds dual Egyptian and Spanish citizenship, stands charged in Egypt with numerous counts of squandering public financial assets. El-Eissawi added that Egypt is now awaiting a response from Spain.

On a related matter, El-Eissawi asserted that the Ministry of Interior is capable of securing the trial of the ousted president, either in court or in the Sharm El-Sheikh hospital where Mubarak is receiving medical care. Mubarak’s trial is scheduled to be begin on 3 August.
