The residents of Salloum, Egypt clashed with police and army on Saturday morning. Four police cars caught fire in front of the police station where the clashes took place.
The clashes erupted when an Egyptian, Anwar Ali, was shot by security forces near the border area as he was trying to smuggle copper rods in from Libya. Ali was taken to the Salloum hospital where his family and residents attacked police in anger over their abuse of power. Ali’s father, Abd El-Salam Ali, and another were injured.
Salloum is located at Egypt’s borders with Libya, and many Egyptian tribes have commercial and social ties with Libya.
