As a new wave of militant protests and strikes sweeps across Egypt in the last few days, 19 political parties and coalitions have issued a joint statement calling on all revolutionaries to honour the peaceful nature of the Egyptian revolution in order to maintain the revolution’s strength and ensure its ultimate victory.
The April 6 Youth movement, Revolution's Youth Coalition, National Association for Change, Democratic Front party, Revolution Artists Coalition and the Popular Socialist Alliance party were among those who signed the statement.
The signatories warned revolutionaries to be vigilant against attempts by forces whom they described as “enemies of the revolution” to drag them into dangerous acts that could disrupt or destroy vital public services, thus turning large numbers of otherwise sympathetic citizens against revolutionary change.
The statement called on revolutionaries to reject violent acts and to use only peaceful methods of struggle such as strikes, hunger strikes and other civil disobedience tactics in order to achieve all their demands.
“Words are stronger than bombs. Blood can overcome swords and guns. The peaceful road is the only guarantee to establish a just and democratic society worthy of the memory of our great martyrs!” the statement declared.
