Several Egyptian governorates witnessed heavy rains on Wednesday that paralysed normal life due to a heavy volume of traffic on main roads, while weather-related accidents left at least 11 dead in Beheira and one in Alexandria.

In the Delta governorate of Kafr El-Sheikh, small villages turned into swamps and pools of mud while car drivers were forced to reduce their driving speeds on highways.

Moreover, the Burullus fishing port, located in the north of the governorate, was closed, along with its strait, due to the bad weather conditions, with waves from the sea exceeding three metres high.

In the Delta governorate of Menoufiya, many villages witnessed power cuts due to the rains with traffic on the main roads paralysed.

The coastal governorate of Matrouh, 290km west of Alexandria, witnessed heavy rains on its 500km shore-line.

Beheira governorate’s Wadi El-Natroun also witnessed high winds and heavy rains. Weather-related accidents left 11 dead and 19 injured according to Ahram Arabic news website. All the injured were transferred to a hospital in the village.

Prime Minister Sherif Ismail travelled to Wadi El-Natroun to check on rescue and aid efforts in the city.

‪Minister of Social Solidarity Ghada Waly announced on Wednesday that the ministry will pay LE10,000 in aid to each family of those who died.

‪One woman was also killed in Alexandria in a weather-related accident, according to Aswat Masriya. The streets of Alexandria, Egypt's second city, have been pummelled by rain since Tuesday, leaving streets flooded and traffic disrupted.

Last week, the governorate witnessed similar weather that led to the death of seven people. Governor Hani El-Messery handed in his resignation to the prime minister amid mounting criticism of the government's response on social media.

The country's weather forecast authority said the rain might continue on Thursday and Friday.
