Thug beaten as he tries to enter Tahrir, hospitalised

Ahram Online, Friday 22 Jul 2011

The “popular committees” responsible for maintaining security in Tahrir beat up two thugs as they tried to generate chaos in the square by attacking protesters, injuring one. Of the two thugs, one was severely beaten and then sent to hospital, while the other managed to run away.

Protesters currently in Tahrir Square have the following demands: the resignation of the current cabinet headed by Essam Sharaf, to be replaced by a revolutionary government with full powers, freeing all political detainees arrested before and after the revolution, ending military trials of civilians, revoking the new parliamentary law and instituting a minimum wage of LE 1,200 as well as fair trials of members of the former regime.

They also want to see the ousted President Hosni Mubarak moved from Sharm El Sheikh to the Turah Prison hospital, the Ministry of the Interior restructured and members of the defunct National Democratic Party banned form participating in politics for two parliamentary terms.

Demonstrators have been back in Tahrir Square since 8 July, vowing not to leave until their demands are met.
