Thousands march from Egypt's Tahrir Square to military council HQ on Friday night

A demonstration against the ruling military council in Cairo is forcefully stopped by the army in Abbasyia

Ahram Online, Saturday 23 Jul 2011

Thousands marched late Friday evening from Tahrir Square, where a two-week long sit-in is ongoing, to the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) headquarters objecting that the demands of the sit-in are still left unmet.

The military and the military police blocked the main entrances to the SCAF headquarters in Abbasyia district and clashed with demonstrators near El-Nour Mosque.

Residents of Abbasyia also clashed with demonstrators.

Similar marches have been staged in Alexandria, Suez and Luxor. Clashes erupted between the military and demonstrators in all three governorates.

A repeat march from Tahrir Square to the SCAF headquarters is planned for Saturday at 4pm.

SCAF released a statement condeming the demonstrators and finger pointing to the 6 April Movement which was described as serving foreign agendas and seeking to create strife between the people and the army.

The 6 April Movement denied involvement in the protest. Several groups released a statement condemning SCAF's accusations.
