Egyptian railway workers staged a protest at Ramsis Station, ‎objecting to unmet promises and the death of a colleague due to lax safety standards

A group of train drivers stood along the railtrack in Ramses Station in central Cairo, blocking train traffic from the north and the south, after a colleague died in an accident in the city of Beni-Soueif. The driver was killed when his train crashed into a truck.

Hisham Fouad, an activist and member of the Democratic Workers Party, said that “protestors were angered by neglected worker safety standards, as well as continuous stalling from station officials in honouring a bonus increase previously agreed upon." Protestors also decried that no compensation was paid to the family of the dead driver.

Fouad added that station officials negotiated with the protesting drivers, agreeing to up their bonuses within a week, as well as to provide immediate compensation to the family of the dead driver.

The train drivers cleared the railtrack after the new agreement was reached.
