An attempt to smuggle 177 antique coins by an Egyptian passenger was foiled Tuesday at Cairo International Airport, state media reported.

The coinages were of different countries including Egypt, Libya, Iraq and Saudi Arabia.

The passenger, who was heading to the Saudi Arabian city of Taif, was hiding the coins in his luggage.

A committee was quick to examine the pieces and verify their authenticity, stressing that according to Egyptian law they are afforded the same protection as historical monuments.
