An attempt to smuggle 22 antique coins by a Greek passenger was foiled on Wednesday at Cairo International Airport, Al-Ahram Arabic news website reported.

The passenger, who was en-route to Athens, hid the antique coins, which date back to the Ottoman Empire, Sultan Hussein reign (1914 - 1917 ) and King Fouad (1922 - 1936), in his luggage.

Officials immediately referred the passenger to prosecution and returned the coinage back to the Ministry of Antiquities.

This incident marks the second attempt to smuggle antique coins out of Egypt in less than a month.

On 8 December, an attempt to smuggle 177 antique coins by an Egyptian passenger was foiled, also at the international airport.
