In Alexandria, greater division within the 6 April Movement saw members of the “Ahmed Maher” front switching to the “democratic front” of the same movement.
In a statement released to the press on Friday, they complained of lack of transparency and democracy and personal-interest as opposed to ethical motives, adding that they will be working independently of Ahmed Maher’s group and instituting the 6 April Democratic Front Facebook page while cooperating with their democratic counterpart in Cairo and elsewhere in Egypt.
The Democratic Front announced that it will not be accepting any financial support whether from foreign or local donors, whether from governments, organisation or NGOs, supporting itself entirely on its members’ donations.
The 6 April Movement has been one of the most active political movements since before the Egyptian revolution. Some believe it had an indispensable role in the revolution itself. Recently, the Supreme Council of Armed Forces (SCAF) accused 6 April of receiving foreign funds, suggesting that they have interests other than those of the nation.
