Mohamed Shawky El-Islambolly, brother of the man responsible for the assassination of former Egyptian president Anwar El-Sadat (Khaled El-Islambolly), returned to Cairo Sunday morning after more than 20 years of living in exile.
After spending years in prison, El-Islambolly left Egypt for Pakistan, later making his way to Iran. He has been living in Iran for the past eight years, but after the overthrow of president Hosni Mubarak, the Iranian government requested that he leave and return to Cairo.
El-Islambolly, who was transferred directly to a maximum security prison in Tora called ‘Scorpion’, is still facing a death sentence for his involvement in Albania and Afghanistan. However, a request has been presented to the currently ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces to issue El-Islambolly a pardon.
His family arrived ahead of him. Though imprisoned, he says that he is optimistic about his family’s and his situation in revolutionary Egypt.
