Egypt's military police restores security barricades around Israeli embassy

Zeinab El Gundy, Monday 29 Aug 2011

Military police yesterday restored cement barricades and steel fences around the Israeli embassy in Cairo yesterday after protesters ended their anti-Israel sit-in.

Thousands of people had maintained a week-long round the clock siege of the embassy to protest the killing of five Egyptian officers in Sinai by Israel and to also pressure the Egyptian government to expel the Israeli ambassdor from the country.

In the last couple of days, the daily number of the protesters  decreased noticeably from hundreds to tens. Several political groups and movements which spearheaded the action, such as the 6 April Movement - Democratic front, decided to end it as they felt that their message had come across to the Egyptian government.
